The Aiel Waste

Map of aiel waste

The Aiel Waste is a desert region to the east of the Spine of the World. It is bordered on the east by an expansive and exotic land known as Shara. The Aiel waste is so inhospitable that only the hardy Aiel can survive for extended periods there.

The Aiel call the Waste the “Three-fold Land,” referring to the gifts the harsh land gives to the Aiel people. The gifts to the Aiel are: a shaping stone to make them, a testing ground to prove their worth, and a punishment for their sin. Aiel prophecy states that the Aiel will leave the Waste once the Stone of Tear falls.

Trollocs call the Aiel Waste “Djevik K’Shar” in their native tongue, meaning “The Dying Ground.”

The southern part of the Aiel Waste just north of the Sea of Storms is called the Termool. It is so dry, barren, and desolate that not even the Aiel travel there.

The People
Adan
Adan was a Da’shain Aiel during the Breaking and the son of the leader, Jonai. His whole family was killed during the journey south from Paaran Disen except for his grandchildren Lewin and Maigran. After the raid in which his last living daughter Rhea was taken away by the raiders, he witnessed the splintering of a group of Aiel who would become the Tuatha’an. Adan was one of Rand’s ancestors, and likely the progenitor of the Andoran royal line as well, through Rhea. In this, Adan might be seen as a parallel to Adam

Adelin
Adelin is a Maiden of the Spear of the Jindo sept of the Taardad Aiel. She is yellow-haired and handsome, but she has a hard face. She also has a scar that cuts across her cheek, and is a hand shorter than Rand and ten years older than Rand. She was one of the Maidens who played Maiden’s Kiss with Mat and was leader of the Maidens who were Rand’s escort in Rhuidean. She deflects Couladin’s spear when he is trying to stab Rand at Alcair Dal. She accompanies Rand when he leaves Rhuidean. When she takes off to dance the spears during a night attack on the Aiel’s camp by Shadowsworm, Rand al’Thor is attacked by Draghkar. When her and the rest of the Maidens who were supposed to be guarding him find out, they all recieve punishments from the Wise Ones in the form of carrying a doll.

Aeron
Aeron is a Wise One, who cannot channel. She is a Black Water Nakai. Aeron’s hair is graying. She is sent to the Royal Library of Cairhien by Sorilea to find out what the Aes Sedai delegation from the White Tower are looking for in there. She is one of the Wise Ones who are supervising the Aes Sedai held prisoner by the Aiel in Cairhien. She sends a couple of Maidens of the Spear to spy on the White Tower Aes Sedai, but they are caught and sent out, getting Aeron in trouble with the other Wise Ones.

Agirin
Agirin is a Maiden of the Spear of the Shelan sept of the Daryne Aiel. On the evening after the battle, Perrin Aybara finds Rand al’Thor sitting alone. Rand is grieving and upset over the death of 151 Maidens in the battle. Perrin sits and listens as Rand begins reciting the names of all the Maidens killed; Agirin’s is the third name in the list

Alarch
Alarch is the son of Rand al’Thor and Aviendha as seen through the visions of Aviendha’s second trip through the Glass columns. Alarch takes after his father’s Andoran heritage and has dark hair. Born as one of four quadruplets, Alarch has two sisters, Marinna and Padra, and a brother Janduin, whom he often defers to. All four siblings could channel since childhood and constantly embrace the True Source. Given special privileges as children of the Dragon, Alarch and his siblings were present at the council of chiefs which decided to go to war with the Seanchan.

Alarys
Alarys is a Wise One of the Shaido Aiel. She is one of the few Aiel to have dark hair. She takes part in the battle of Dumai’s Wells with Sevanna. She is one of the Wise Ones who attack the Aes Sedai who are holding Rand al’Thor. She helps to activate the call box and is present when both “Cadder” and “Maisia” arrive. She ends up Traveling to Ghealdan. With Therava and a few other Wise Ones she stands up to Sevanna and begins to take away some of her power.

Alijha
Alijha was a young Da’shain Aiel after the Breaking. He helped Lewin, Luca, Gearan, and Charlin free Maigran and Colline from bandits. When they killed the bandits, they were disowned by their families for using violence; a violation of the core beliefs of the Da’shain Aiel.

Alnora
Alnora was a female Da’shain Aiel during the Breaking. She was a dreamer. She had shoulder length glossy black hair. She died in front of her husband Jonai.

Alsera
Alsera is the wife of the clan chief, Bruan, of the Nakai Aiel. She informs Seana through Dreamwalking that the Nakai Aiel will run all the way from Shiagi Hold to Alcair Dal to get there on time.

Amaryn
Amaryn is Sorilea’s greatdaughter. Her youngest greatson is Taric. Sorilea tells Egwene al’Vere that she will set up Taric with her, as a husband if she wants to.

Amys
Amys, of the Nine Valleys sept of the Taardad Aiel, is a Wise One who can channel and a Dreamwalker. Amys is slim and tall, with blue eyes and long white hair that hangs to her waist. Her skin is sun-darkened from living in the Waste. She used to be a Maiden of the Spear. Later she became an apprentice Wise One under Bair, and tried to run away a number of times. She is Rhuarc’s wife, and sister-wife to Lian, the Roofmistress of Cold Rocks Hold.

She meets Egwene al’Vere in Tel’aran’rhiod while Egwene is searching for the Black Ajah. She tells Egwene to come to Aiel Waste where she can teach her how to become a proper Dreamwalker. She meets Rand al’Thor and the rest of the Aiel when they are transported from Tear to Rhuidean via the Portal Stone. She with the rest of the Aiel Wise One’s had sent a letter to Moiraine Damodred saying where they would meet and which day.

She then travels with Rand and the rest of the Aiel to Cairhien. She takes Egwene al’Vere as an apprentice with Bair and teaches her how to Dreamwalk. She is with Egwene in Tel’aran’rhiod when the Salidar Six summon Egwene to Salidar. Her opinion of Aes Sedai has somewhat diminished with the several meetings she had with them. She is present when Egwene reveals the lie that she is not actually an Aes Sedai. She then gives Egwene a beating to meet her Toh. She was proud of Egwene and would accept her back as an Aiel Wise One again if she ever returns. She leads a group of Wise Ones to help rescue Rand from the White Tower Aes Sedai but defers to Sorilea as leader in the end. She participates in the Battle of Dumai’s Wells. After the battle she suggests the Aes Sedai prisoners be placed into the Wise Ones’ care. She is present when Rand is Healed by Damer Flinn from the Shadar Logoth dagger. She is now in complete control of the Aes Sedai, dismissing Bera Harkin and Kiruna Nachiman from Cairhien’s Throneroom. She acts as Elayne Trakand and Aviendha’s mother in the first-sister bonding ceremony.

Months later she Travels with the rest of her clan to Arad Doman, where the Aiel attempt to bring peace to the war torn country. While there she gives Aviendha more and more meaningless punishments, in an attempt to make her stand up to the other Wise Ones. She is at the meeting with Rand and the Aiel Clan Chiefs when Rand gives the order for the Aiel to capture the Council of Merchants. She is present when Davram Bashere and Damer Flinn arrive at the Traveling grounds after being sent to the Daughter of the Nine Moons to request her to meet with Rand. Later she follows Cadsuane into Rand’s room where she finds out about Semirhage’s escape and then death. Aviendha finally confronts the Wise Ones, including Amys on how pointless the tasks she have given are. Standing up to the other Wise Ones is the final test and they send Aviendha to Rhuidean to become a Wise One as well. When Cadsuane is banished from Rand’s sight she comes to the Wise One’s for help and a new plan. She is meeting with Cadsuane when Nynaeve al’Meara enters with the news that Rand just burned a whole palace full of people away with Balefire. Egwene meets Amys and Bair in tel’aran’rhiod to inform them that she has become Amyrlin Seat of the White Tower. Egwene then informs them of Rand’s plan to break the remaining Seals on the Dark One’s prison and asks them and the rest of the Wise Ones to help her oppose him.

Andhilin
Andhilin was a Maiden of the Spear of the Red Salt Goshien. Rand considers her to be one of the women who have died for him

Aviellin
Aviellin is a Far Dareis Mai of an unknown clan and sept. She is part of Perrin Aybara’s army that goes into Ghealdan. She is gravely injured while taking out the Shaido sentries around Malden. She has to be Healed by Janina.

Aviendha
Aviendha was a Maiden of the Spear of the Nine Valleys sept of the Taardad Aiel until she became an apprentice with the Wise Ones. Aviendha is tall and strong, though with ample curves. Her eyes are blue-green and she has reddish hair, once short and now held back with a scarf as it is growing out. Aviendha was born in 980 NE. She is from the Nine Valleys sept of the Taardad clan (though an early authorial error has her listed as being of the Bitter Water sept). She has a first-sister (born of the same mother) six or seven years older than her named Niella. Her sister-mother (aunt) is Lian. Aviendha has wanted to be Far Dareis Mai since childhood. Aviendha enters the story as an Aiel Maiden of the Spear, a warrior woman who is married to her weapon, having fulfilled her childhood dream. She was one of the Aiel who ventured out of the Aiel Waste, across the Spine of the World and into the so-called “wetlands” in search of the Car’a’carn, the Aiel chief of chiefs, He Who Comes With The Dawn. They aided Egwene al’Vere, Elayne Trakand and Nynaeve al’Meara on their travels and eventually ended up at the Stone of Tear when Rand al’Thor took Callandor, the crystal sword sa’angreal. There Aviendha befriended the three women further, especially Egwene and Elayne, who she began to call her near-sisters according to Aiel custom.

While she would have gladly accompanied Elayne and Nynaeve to Tanchico to hunt Darkfriends, Aviendha was summoned back to Rhuidean in the Aiel Waste for unknown reasons. Making the best of it, she promised Elayne to keep Rand unattached and departed, arriving in the company of Rand, Egwene, Moiraine Sedai and Lan Mandragoran. There the truth came out; Aviendha had been summoned because she could learn to channel, and would be trained to join the ranks of the Wise Ones. She is about as strong in the One Power as Elayne and Egwene, making her one of the strongest female channelers alive. She remained with the Aiel that accompanied Rand’s campaign against the rogue Shaido clan in Cairhien, and assisted in his strike against Rahvin in Caemlyn. At Rhuidean, Aviendha saw that she was fated to fall in love with Rand, and feared retribution from Elayne: she’d promised to keep anyone from stealing Rand out from under Elayne’s nose, only to discover she would do just that herself. Blaming Rand for her predicament, Aviendha became suddenly hostile, behaviour that baffled him. The situation was exacerbated when the Aiel Wise Ones instructed Aviendha to teach Rand about the Aiel people and eventually even sleep in his tent. The situation finally came to a head when one day Rand happened to come upon Aviendha while she was naked. Panicking, she made a gateway (incidentally a feat she is not able to reproduce until much later in the series) to the opposite side of the world and fled through it into a blizzard. Rand, realizing that she would not survive long without clothes in a freezing, foreign land, grabbed blankets and pursued her. After Rand fished her out of a river that she fell into, Aviendha declared that she would run from her fate no longer and revealed her love to Rand in the form of sudden and unexpected sexual intercourse. Rand kept her close (albeit awkwardly at times) through the battles with the Shaido and the attack on Rahvin, though Aviendha decided to forgo anything physical again until she could talk with Elayne. Fortunately, their liaison does not seem to have damaged Rand’s love for Elayne, nor Aviendha’s and Elayne’s friendship.

After Rahvin’s demise, Rand foisted Aviendha off on Mat Cauthon—not to break their mutual attraction (at the time he too was having trouble getting used to the idea of loving three women) but rather because any woman near him would be in danger, and he couldn’t stand to see her hurt. After they arrived at Salidar, Aviendha agreed to accompany Elayne and Nynaeve to Ebou Dar; she assisted in the use of the Bowl of the Winds once it was found. She has also been given a woman shaped angreal by Elayne to use. Now safely in Caemlyn, she has finally had a chance to meet Min Farshaw, the third member of Rand’s women, and they seem to be getting along. She and Elayne have also formally become first-sisters, an Aiel ceremony that invokes a Power-wrought connection not unlike a Warder bond. Also, Aviendha, along with both Elayne and Min, have Bonded Rand as their ‘Warder’ in a private ceremony. She remains in Caemlyn, safeguarding Elayne and, according to Min, Rand’s newly conceived twins. Min has seen in her visions that Aviendha will have four of Rand’s babies at once, but that there is something odd about it. The children will be born healthy, but there is something odd about that, too.

When Rand and Nynaeve are trying to cleanse saidin, both Elayne and Aviendha sense huge amounts of channeling without knowing what is going on. Elayne suggests going to help Rand but Aviendha reveals that this event is one of the visions she saw while in Rhuidean. If they Travel there something bad will happen to them or Rand so they must ignore the event. Aviendha recently discovered a Talent for identifying the function of ter’angreal; shortly after that, she is taken away from Caemlyn by the Wise Ones to resume her apprenticeship, to Arad Doman with the rest of her clan.

When she arrives in Arad Doman she begins to scout with Rhuarc. She is at the meeting with Rand and the Aiel Clan Chiefs when Rand gives the order for the Aiel to capture the Council of Merchants. She is also given increasingly more meaningless tasks designed to shame her for “not learning quickly enough”. While carrying out one of her meaningless tasks, she witnesses a Bubble of evil combust the Saldaean soldier Adrin. His remains then catch fire to the nearby manor. She weaves a massive column of Air and Water from a nearby river and transports water onto the fire, with help from Naeff and manages to put the fire out. She is present when Davram Bashere and Damer Flinn arrive at the Traveling grounds after being sent to the Daughter of the Nine Moons to request her to meet with Rand. Aviendha feels the pain when Semirhage captures Rand and raises the alarm. The next day Min seeks her out and although the two are awkward round each other, they both respect each other. Min points out the pointlessness of her tasks which finally make Aviendha snap and confront the Wise One’s over the fruitlessness of her punishments. In the end, what she was not learning quickly enough was to stand up for herself and see herself as their equal, which was the last step in her training as a Wise One. Upon finally doing so, she departs for Rhuidean to walk through the pillars there.

In order to contemplate her future and prepare for her journey to Rhuidean itself, Aviendha Travelled to Cold Rocks Hold and proceeded on foot towards Rhuidean. One night during her travels, she met a mysterious stranger calling herself Nakomi, who engaged Aviendha in conversation regarding the future of the Aiel. This causes Aviendha to seriously contemplate where the future lay for the Aiel as a people, since their reason for being in the Three Fold Land seems to have come to its conclusion. Upon reaching Rhuidean, Aviendha walked through the Glass Pillars, but felt little different afterwards, as Rand had already revealed what the Pillars held. Sitting beneath Avendesora, Aviendha decided to study the Glass Pillar “ter’angreal”, but backed off after realizing it was beyond her Talents and is incomprehensible to a single person. Deciding to leave Rhuidean, her first step led to a disturbing vision from the Glass Pillars of the Aiel’s future, showing the destruction of the Aiel people. Shocked and afraid of what she would find, Aviendha nevertheless decided to walk through the Pillars again and discovered, through the eyes of her daughter Padra and her subsequent descendants, the descent of the Aiel to a people without honor; and that the reason was the decision to break the Dragon’s Peace and to go to war with the Seanchan Empire after the Last Battle. Resolving to do all she can to prevent this future from coming to pass, Aviendha left Rhuidean to rejoin with her people.

Bael
Bael is the clan chief of the Goshien Aiel and is married to Dorindha and Melaine. He is a very tall man, even by Aiel standards, with greying red hair. His clan had a blood feud with Jheran’s Shaarad clan. He is present at Alcair Dal when Rand al’Thor declares himself Car’a’carn at the same time as Couladin. After this, he takes his clan to Rhuidean and wait for the rest of the clans to gather there. Later, while the Aiel are on there way to cross the Dragonwall he marries the Wise One Melaine. Due to Rand’s ta’veren nature he heals the Blood Oath with the Shaarad Clan by taking a Water Oath with Jheran. He becomes one of Rand’s most trusted Aiel clan chiefs, along with Rhuarc and is part of the group that attacks Rahvin in Caemlyn. He is in charge of all the Aiel in Andor with Rhuarc in Cairhien. Rand meets with Bael after he had been rescued from the White Tower Aes Sedai, and initiates the strike on Illian. On request by Elayne Trakand, he is asked to withdraw all his Aiel troops from Caemlyn. He has now camped outside the city and is forced to watch the siege against it without interfering. Months later he Travels with the rest of his clan to Arad Doman. There, he is required by Rand to bring peace to the war torn country. He then meets with Rand but is reprimanded by Rand for taking to long in bringing order. He is then given orders to try and capture all the missing Council of Merchants in order to force them to appoint a new ruler.

She accompanies Faile when she goes with Perrin to meet Rand al’Thor in Caemlyn. She is Rand’s guard when he is taken by the White Tower Aes Sedai.

She then moves out with Perrin and Faile when they Travel to Ghealdan to track down Masema Dagar. While out hunting, she is captured by the Shaido and made Gai’shain. She helps Arrela Shiego and Lacile Aldorwin escape the Shaido camp but refuses to escape herself. She and Chiad help Faile by making sure a captive Dairaine Saighan doesn’t run to Sevanna to inform her of Faile’s planned escape. During the Battle of Malden, Gaul rescues Chiad but kills the man who had Bain as his gai’shain. They now both serve him. She recovers some clothing of Rolan, Kinhuin and Jhoradin so that Faile can carry out a funeral service for the fallen men.

She meets Rand al’Thor and the rest of the Aiel when they are transported from Tear to Rhuidean via the Portal Stone. She with the rest of the Aiel Wise Ones had sent a letter to Moiraine Damodred saying where they would meet and which day. She takes Egwene al’Vere as an apprentice with Amys and teaches her how to Dreamwalk. She is with Egwene in Tel’aran’rhiod when the Salidar Six summon Egwene to Salidar. Her opinion of Aes Sedai have somewhat diminished with the several meetings she had with them. She is present when Egwene reveals the lie that she is not actually an Aes Sedai. She then gives Egwene a beating to meet her Toh. She was proud of Egwene and would accept her back as an Aiel Wise One again if she ever returns.

She is asked by Cadsuane Melaidhrin to observe Semirhage and offer any insight into how to break her. Aviendha finally confronts the Wise Ones, including Bair on how pointless the tasks she have given are. While he seemingly resists the overwhelming truths that he discovers at first, he soon succumbs to his horror and shame, and begins to violently wound himself in an attempt to stop the flow of ancient memories. While Rand, who is mentally unaffected, stares on in disbelief and shock, Muradin, in between flashbacks, proceeds to gouge deep scars in his own face. After the Aiel have gathered, Nandera speaks to her about it, and agrees with Sulin that they will deal with it once they have returned to the palace. Sulin appears in Rand’s chambers, dressed in livery and serving in the Royal Palace in Caemlyn. When Rand recognizes her, she flees rather than answer his questions. Nandera and Jalani are in the room, serving as Rand’s guard, as is Aviendha. Rand remembers the incident with the gai’shain before the visit to Shadar Logoth, and figures out that Sulin is working as a servant to fulfill her toh to them, since she dishonored by reminding them of their status before they were gai’shain. Reluctantly, Nandera explains that she had taken her to the kitchens, since Sulin thought scullery work would fulfill her toh. However, the man in charge refused. Nandera then took her to Reene Harfor, the First Maid, and spoke with her, resulting in her agreement to allow Sulin to serve.

Shortly afterwards, a gray man appears. Rand catches sight of it before it reaches them, though the women can’t see it, and imprisons it with the One Power. Mazrim Taim arrives, having Traveled to the palace to see Rand, and kills the gray man with fire. Once it is dead, all three women can see it. Both of the Maidens believe they have toh because they did not stop the gray man, even though they knew they couldn’t see it “except by chance”, and are worried that other Aiel may find out about their failure. To settle the issue, Rand tells them he doesn’t want anyone to know about Taim’s visit. He asks them to keep quiet about the details, so they don’t “make him out a liar.” Grateful, Nandera informs Rand that they have toh towards him

She avoids Aviendha when she can, as her sister seems to be very strict with her. After Rand and Aviendha returned to Rand’s bedchamber after sleeping together in far off snows, Asmodean mentions that a gai’shain looking very much like Aviendha had come requesting that Rand eat. Asmodean had turned her away, saying that Rand and Aviendha would like time alone. Niella had whooped and laughed, and ran off to tell the Maidens. Aviendha vowed that she would leave a welt on her sister’s bottom for every Maiden she told. In Cairhien, Egwene ran into Niella exitting Rand al’Thor’s bedchamber with an armful of dirty bedding. Seana
Seana was a Wise One of the Black Cliffs sept of the Nakai Aiel. She couldn’t channel. Seana, as old looking as Bair, had grey-streaked dark hair and bluish grey eyes. She meets Rand al’Thor and the rest of the Aiel when they are transported from Tear to Rhuidean via the Portal Stone. She with the rest of the Aiel Wise One’s had sent a letter to Moiraine Damodred saying where they would meet and which day. She is killed by a Draghkar when they attack Rand at Cold Rocks Hold in the Aiel Waste.

Safala
Sefela is a Far Dareis Mai. She was one of the Aiel who helped Rand al’Thor capture the Stone of Tear.

Sendara

Sevanna
Sevanna is a Wise One of the Jumai sept of the Shaido Aiel, and acts as clan chief until a new one can be chosen. She has golden hair, green eyes. She tends to wear as much jewelry as she can which covers most of her considerable bosom. Even as a young woman, Sevanna finds herself drawn to power. Using her beauty to achieve her goals, she marries Suladric, clan chief of the Shaido, at age sixteen. As such, she becomes Roofmistress of the Jumai hold. Following Suladric’s death, Sevanna assumes the role of leader for the clan, “speaking as the clan chief of the Shaido” until a new chief is chosen. The widow swiftly and shrewdly selected the men most likely to succeed her late husband as clan chief: Muradin and Couladin.

Muradin is given permission by the Wise Ones to enter Rhuidean, to become clan chief if he returned. Sevanna had designs to marry Muradin upon his return, but the revelation of the Aiel’s history is too much for him and he never emerges from the glass column ter’angreal. When the Aiel gather at Alcair Dal in response to Rand’s summons, Muradin’s first-brother Couladin reveals that he had the markings of the Car’a’carn to all assembled before Rand al’Thor has a chance, and indirectly becomes clan chief. Sevanna attaches herself to him in an effort to gain control of the entire clan, and together they lead the Shaido west of the Dragonwall.

The Shaido lay siege to the city of Cairhien after leaving a trail of death and destruction during their journey from the Aiel Waste. They begin taking the Fifth from any place they passed, and any wetlanders they could find as so-called gai’shain. This is considered dishonorable by the majority of the Aiel; those who do not follow ji’e’toh are not subject to its dictates. A gai’shan serves willingly and humbly to restore honor while these wetlanders taken prisoner are unwilling slaves. The Shaido are prepared to break more traditions as it becomes expedient in the near future, Sevanna perhaps first and foremost of that mindset. When Rand and the rest of the Aiel clans arrive, a large battle ensued. Mat Cauthon, with what would become the Band of the Red Hand, encounters a group of Aiel led by Couladin outside the city. The two groups fight and Mat kills Couladin. Overwhelmed, the Shaido retreat north of the city to Kinslayer’s Dagger. With Couladin’s death, Sevanna once more eagerly finds herself leading the Shaido. The clan remains at Kinslayer’s Dagger for some time, but the Shaido Wise Ones journey to the camp of the Wise Ones at Cairhien with Sevanna. Despite having never visited Rhuidean herself (and thus not knowing the truth of Aiel history), or even being accepted as an apprentice to a Wise One, she is nonetheless acknowledged as a Wise One by the Wise Ones of her own clan. This forces the Wise Ones of the rest of the clans to do the same.

Sevanna has her sight set on Rand, the Car’a’carn, chief of chiefs, the most powerful position of which a power-hungry Aiel can dream. While the Shaido are at Kinslayer’s Dagger, she encounters a wetlander by name of Caddar, who was actually Sammael. He provides her with a callbox with instructions to use it when she had captured Rand. An embassy sent by the White Tower to Rand in Cairhien meets with Sevanna and several of her Wise Ones. Sevana agrees to give the aid of her Shaido to the Aes Sedai plans to kidnap Rand and bring him to the White Tower. The Aes Sedai also plan to send the Younglings, who are escorting the embassy and led by Gawyn, to fight the Shaido thus eliminating the Younglings. Sevanna does not intend to follow through on the promise of help. Sevanna intends to kidnap Rand away from the Aes Sedai for herself, to marry him, control him, and thus have the ultimate power over all Aiel. She convinces thirteen of the Wise Ones who can channel to kill one of their own, Desaine, with the One Power. Sevanna chooses Desaine to die because of her vocal disagreement with Sevanna. Sevanna’s loyal Wise Ones grimly agree to the secret murder as a means to put al’Thor into their hands. The secret of Desaine’s true cause of death binds these “loyal” Wise Ones to her firmly. Claiming the murder was perpetrated by Aes Sedai, Sevanna calls on all channeling Wise Ones to take part in an attack against the Aes Sedai at Dumai’s Wells in retaliation for Desaine’s death. She orders the spears of all algai’d’siswai to take vengeance as well. There are six or seven Wise One channelers for every one Aes Sedai holding Rand. There are 40,000 algai’d’sisai. Sevanna revels in the excitement of battle, of which she is confident of victory, although she would prefer to watch from a rise to have a clear view as would a clan chief or battle leader directing the dance of the spears. Instead she is on the ground verbally shouting orders of encouragement. However, the Battle of Dumai’s Wells is already under way when Sevanna’s Shaido arrive. Aiel and wetlanders loyal to Rand are battling the Aes Sedai and their forces. Rand’s rescue army of Aiel, soldiers of Two River, Tairens, Carhienins, and Mayeners slash through the Shaido. Even wolves join in the slaughter on the side against the Shaido. Sevanna is shocked that Wise Ones not of the Shaido are participating in the battle with the Power. Ultimately the Shaido are forced to retreat, despite Sevanna’s feverish urging, when the Asha’man begin their butchering.

Sevanna used the call box to summon Caddar, asking him for a way to Travel so that she could obtain more wealth; Caddar later returned with items he called Traveling Boxes that ostensibly used saidin to create gateways. He tells Sevanna that it is best to use them now, as Rand is on the way with a few clans to confront the Shaido. Sammael opened multiple gateways, pretending that the boxes were doing the work. The gateways did not all lead to the same location, but rather scattered the Shaido across multiple nations. Sevanna’s party had all of the Wise Ones who could channel, and was sent to Ghealdan. Sevanna by this time was growing very greedy; the Shaido spears with her continued to raid towns and villages, taking money and jewels. She also wished to take more gai’shain, although she much preferred putting nobles into the white robes. It was on one of these raids that Shaido spears captured Faile and her party, including Alliandre and Maighdin, among others. All three women become Sevanna’s personal gai’shain.

The Shaido finally settle in the town of Malden where they wait for the rest of the septs to find them and join them. The Shaido become increasingly lazy and drunk under Sevanna’s leadership. Therava argues with Sevanna that the Shaido need to move from this place to something more fortified, to which Sevanna disagrees with. Therava reveals that Bendhuin has received permission to go to Rhuidean, much to Sevanna’s displeasure. Sevanna is captured during the Battle of Malden. She is stripped, tied to Tylee’s horse, and paraded around the camp.

Shyanda
Shyanda is an Aiel Wise One. She has fiery red hair. She takes part in the first-sister bonding ceremony with Aviendha and Elayne Trakand.

Siedre
Siedre was the wife of Adan, a direct ancestor of Rand al’Thor and also likely a direct ancestor of Ishara. She had red-gold hair. Siedre was killed when the wagons of the Da’shain Aiel were attacked, apparently near the Mountains of Mist. She and Adan had five children: Rhea, who was kidnapped by the same bandits that killed Siedre, and Marind, a son who had been killed by the first arrow that same morning; Sorelle, a Dreamwalker, who dreamed of her own death by fever at age twenty; Jaren, who discovered he could channel at age nineteen and subsequently threw himself off a cliff; and Elwin, who died of hunger at age ten. Siedre also had two grandchildren through her son Marind: Maigran and Lewin. It can be reasonably determined that Ishara, founding queen of Andor, was directly descended from Rhea. Hence, Rand’s paternal line (through Janduin) and maternal line (through Tigraine) can be traced to a common ancestor.

Somara
Somara is an Aiel Far Dareis Mai. She treats Rand al’Thor as a son. She is very tall, just about as tall as Rand with blond hair. She is one of the Maidens who surround Rand when he meets the nobles in Cairhien after the battle with the Shaido. She is also one of the Maidens who go to the battle in Caemlyn to fight Rahvin’s forces. She is not impressed with the amount of affection Rand shows Min Farshaw when Min first arrives in Caemlyn. She accompanies Rand when he Travels to Caemlyn after he had been captured by the White Tower Aes Sedai. She, along with the rest of the Maidens of the Spear, is furious at being left behind during Rand al’Thor’s campaign’s against Illian and the Seanchan. Because the Maidens think of Rand as a first-brother, she beats him up him as punishment when he returns to Cairhien. When the rogue Asha’man blow up Rand’s quarters, she is on guard duty and perishes.

Someryn
Someryn is a Wise One of the Shaido Aiel who follows Sevanna. She is very strong in the One Power. She shows even more cleavage than Sevanna and is tall as most men. She has very long sandy yellow hair and is very attractive. She participated in the murder of Desaine. She fought in the Battle of Dumai’s Wells. She helps to activate the call box and is present when both Cadder and Maisia (Sammael and Graendal) arrive. She ends up Traveling to Ghealdan. With Therava and a few other Wise Ones she begins to oppose Sevanna and starts to take away some of her power. She now has Faile Bashere who has been made Sevanna’s Gai’shain, to spy on Sevanna and report back all information to her.

Sorilea
Sorilea is a Wise One of the Jarra sept of the Chareen Aiel. She is the Wise One from Shende Hold. She has green eyes, thin white hair and is described as being all sinew and bone, like “leather stretched tightly over bone”.

Sorilea is barely able to channel, but is one of the oldest and most revered Wise Ones. She has a formidable and forceful personality and can be quite frightening. She once made an apprentice search through a pile of sand to find one grain of red sand as punishment for speaking out of turn. She is present when Egwene reveals the lie that she is not actually an Aes Sedai. She then gives Egwene a beating to meet her Toh. She is proud of Egwene and would accept her back as an Aiel Wise One, when Egwene leaves for Salidar. Along with Melaine, she accepts Min Farshaw as a “sort of Wise One”. She realizes both Min and Rand are missing at the same time and thinks it may have something to do with the White Tower Aes Sedai. She leads a huge contingent of Wise Ones in the rescue of Rand in the battle of Dumai’s Wells.
After the battle she suggests the Aes Sedai prisoners be placed into the Wise Ones’ care.

She makes a pact with Cadsuane Melaidhrin to teach Rand al’Thor to laugh and cry again. Sorilea brings in Beldeine Nyram, Erian Boroleos, Elza Penfell, Nesune Bihara and Sarene Nemdahl to swear fealty to Rand when he arrives back in Cairhien. She then takes them away to become apprentices for the Wise Ones. She Travels to Arad Doman with the rest of the Aiel. She is asked by Cadsuane to observe Semirhage and offer any insight into how to break her. Later she follows Cadsuane into Rand’s room where she finds out about Semirhage’s escape and then death. When Cadsuane is banished from Rand’s sight she comes to the Wise One’s for help and a new plan. She is meeting with Cadsuane when Nynaeve al’Meara enters with the news that Rand just burned a whole palace full of people away with Balefire.

Sulin leads the Maidens in protecting Rand and sees him as a first-brother. She serves as Roofmistress for the Roof of the Maidens while in Rhuidean, then relinquishes that position to lead the Maidens who accompany Rand. She continues to guard him during the battle with the Shaido outside Cairhien in which she receives an injury. Sulin confronts Rand about not allowing the Maidens to attack Caemlyn while all the other Aiel societies do. She tells him that Far Daries Mai no longer have honor. Rand agrees to take the Maiden’s into battle now and Sulin goes with him on his attack of Rahvin.

After Rand takes over Caemlyn, Loial’s mother, Elder Haman and Erith (a female ogier who loves Loial) turn up; Rand takes them to Shadar Logoth (where they lose a maiden called Liah) through a gateway before taking them to the Two Rivers to find Loial. First Sulin tells Rand that he needs an escort. Rand tells her to assemble that escort as quick as possible. Sulin speaks to a gai’shain as she would a Maiden and in doing so she earns toh. To meet her toh, after her return to Caemlyn, Sulin becomes a maid in the royal palace. She works as a maid for over a month and a half, but rejoins the Maidens when Rand is kidnapped by the White Tower. Sulin orders her Cadin’sor back and organizes the Maidens for a rescuing mission. Both she and Nandera attempt to lead the Maidens, which culminates in a fight between the two. Although Sulin wins the power struggle, Nandera appears to continue leading the Maidens afterwords. Sulin participates in the Battle of Dumai’s Wells. Sulin accompanies Rand into Cairhien’s Throne Room when he confronts Colavaere Saighan about taking the Sun Throne for herself. She then goes with him to Caemlyn. Since Rand’s capture she has become very protective of him.

Sulin Travels to Ghealdan with Perrin Aybara and his army to track down Masema Dagar. She tries and track Faile Bashere, Chiad and Bain when they are captured by the Shaido. Sulin is among the Maidens who meet Perrin when he sets out to view the Shaido camped in Malden. She is present when Perrin questions the Shaido being held prisoner, looking for answers about his missing wife. Sulin comes back with a fresh slash on her face after killing the Shaido sentries around Malden, just before Perrin’s combined attack with the Seanchan.

In the first printing of the Gathering Storm, Sulin is listed as being one of the Maidens to scout ahead at Natrin’s Barrow after Lord Ramshalan has gone through to deliver Rand’s emissary to Graendal. However, this is incorrect as she remains with Perrin. The Maiden who should be said to scout out Natrin’s Barrow is Nerilea, as it now says in the e-book version.

While traveling from Malden, Sulin scouts a village in the middle of Ghealden that seems to be affected by the Blight. She comes to Perrin with the news that there are Children of the Light camped up ahead. She is part of Perrin’s group that meet with Galadedrid Damodred to discuss parley with the Whitecloaks.

She is also there when Sammael splits up the remaining Shaido across the world and she, along with the newly acquired Aes Sedai Galina Casban, go with Sevanna to Ghealdan. After forcing Galina to obey her, Therava makes her gai’shain and takes her as her personal plaything, dressing her up in silk and jewelry and calling her “Lina” or “my little Lina”. The Shaido finally settle down in the town of Malden. When Faile is captured, Therava makes her spy on Sevanna. She begins to argue with Sevanna over staying too long in Malden and moving on to a more fortified position. Sevanna over-rules her. Therava replies that Bendhuin has received permission to go to Rhuidean and that Sevanna may not speak for the clan chief much longer.
