The Wheel of Time - The Call of the Horn
Illian is a country that lies in the far south of the Westlands, to the west of Tear whose capital city bears the same name. It is famous for hosting the Great Hunt for the Horn. It is feared by its neighbors Altara and Murandy for swallowing pieces of their countries from time to time. The city after which the nation is named is one of the largest in Randland and is penetrated by lots of little channels. It also boasts of a great square where the Hunters of the Horn gather to swear their oaths. Two opposing but similar palaces, one for the king and one for the council may be found adjoining the square. The council’s palace is just a bit smaller.
Illian lies in the south of the Westlands where the Manetherendrelle flows into the Sea of Storms. The city of Illian boasts the largest port in the known world — a giant circular harbor. To the west sprawls forests and olive groves. The far north is quite mountainous, bulwarked by castles and hillforts. To the east is a vast marshland finally opening up to the Plains of Maredo. The city’s immediate surroundings is made up of these swamps and therefore does not need any protecting wall.
The nation of Illian was formed after the capture of the city of Illian by Lord Nicoli Merseneos den Ballin near the end of the War of the Hundred Years, becoming its first king. His family continued to rule Illian for the next three hundred years. Illian is also famous for its endless wars with Tear as they argue over oil trading rights.
Illian is ruled both by a Council of Nine, and a king who wears the Laurel Crown. In the absence or indisposition of the king, the Council of Nine rules in his stead. The current King of Illian is Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn. The former king, Mattin Stepaneos den Balgar, disappeared two days before Rand’s invasion and later appears again as a hostage in the White Tower. Sammael was discovered to have been masquerading as one of the Council of Nine, Lord Brend, until his defeat by Rand al’Thor. After Rand took Illian, he renamed the Laurel Crown to the Crown of Swords.
Whenever a Great Hunt (for the Horn of Valere) is called, its participants, who are called Hunters, are commissioned in the Great Square of Tammaz in the city of Illian.
Illian’s elite troops are known as the Illianer Companions. This organization is rare in that it permits foreigners to become First Captain (the highest rank in the Companions). They are placed wherever fighting is heaviest, and follow the king into danger. Rand al’Thor’s father Tam was a Second Captain of the Companions.
The dialect of Illian is distinct in that Illianers use the emphatic tense of nearly every verb, shun the progressive tense, and use “no” in place of “not.” Thus, “He had not made sure every stick of bread went to the army” becomes “He did no make sure every stick of bread did go to the army.”
Andris was an Illianer. Andris had a stub of a nose and a wide, grinning mouth. He had dark eyes and wore a curly beard with no mustache in the Illianer fashion. Andris was a messenger from “Lord Brend.” He brought an offer of a truce between Sammael and Rand al’Thor. When Rand declared that there would be “no truce with the Shadow,” Andris started to bleed from his pores and convulse. He collapses and dies in a pool of blood. 1 Due to his manner of death, it seems that he was under severe Compulsion. Later, Sammael tells Graendal that he has a truce with al’Thor. It is unknown if this is a lie on Sammael’s part or a misinterpretation of Andris’ death.
Teslyn Baradon is an Aes Sedai of the Red Ajah. She is from Illian. She is scrawny with narrow shoulders, a gaunt face and a narrow nose. She has dark brown eyes and thin lips.
She was one of the Aes Sedai who allied with Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan and took Siuan Sanche into custody for her involvement with the Dragon Reborn. After Siuan is deposed, she becomes one of Elaida’s close confidants.
She is expelled from the Hall as a Sitter and sent to Ebou Dar along with Joline Maza as ambassadors of the White Tower. She meets Matrim Cauthon inside the Palace and has a debate over whether he should be returned to the White Tower, with the Rebel Aes Sedai embassy that are there as well. During this exchange she slips a note into Mat’s pocket warning Nynaeve al’Meara and Elayne Trakand to be wary of the White Tower and in particular Elaida. She is later captured by the Seanchan after their invasion of Altara and made damane. During this time, she is also known as Tessi. Mat later visits her and vows to break her free to pay the debt of her note. She becomes increasingly grim under Seanchan captivity. She is finally rescued by Mat with the help of Egeanin Tamarath and the captive sul’dam.
After fleeing Ebou Dar Mat’s group joins up with Valan Luca’s Traveling Circus as a cover to escape Seanchan notice. When Egeanin is stabbed by Renna Emain, who then flees Luca’s circus, Teslyn Heals the wound. Joline begins to throw things at Mat with the One Power when she finds that he is wearing a ter’angreal that disrupts weaves. She is pulled aside by Teslyn who demands that she stops doing that. Teslyn then finds out that Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag is a High Lady of Seanchan and continues to approach her about forming a truce with the White Tower. Finally things get out of hand and Selucia slaps an a’dam on her and hands it to Tuon who forces control over her. Teslyn is in near panic when Mat defuses the situation and takes the bracelets off her and buries them with the promise that Teslyn won’t bother Tuon again.
After a skirmish with Darkfriends in Maderin Mat and the rest of his group decide to leave Luca’s show. While riding through Altara they meet up with the Band of the Red Hand and begin to travel with them. Mat uses her to send a flare into the sky to signal his troops to spring an ambush against a Seanchan unit. The unit is just about completely wiped out. When Furyk Karede enters the bands camp to bring Tuon back to Ebou Dar, Sheraine Caminelle who has been made damane also accompanies him. Joline tries to get Melitene to let her go. Teslyn tries to convince Joline to forget about Sheraine when suddenly both are shielded by Sheraine herself. Mat manages to get Melitene to release the shields. She takes part in the battle between the Seanchan force that is trying to kill Tuon for the one hundred thousand gold crown reward and the Band of the Red Hand. She has to stand near the front ranks in order to feel in danger. She rides with Mat into the cursed village of Hinderstap and is attacked by the crazed villagers when nightfall comes. The group only just manage to escape the village and wait the night away before entering the village again at daybreak to find everyone is back to normal. When the Band arrives in Caemlyn Teslyn meets Mat at his tent to bid him farewell. As he is promising her horses the gholam attacks. When she realizes that the One Power is not affecting it, she starts to throw objects with weaves of Air, which does. After the gholam retreats, she begins her journey back to the White Tower with Joline, Edesina, Egeanin (Leilwin), and Domon. A few months later, she and her companions arrive at the Tower.

Erian Boroleos is an Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah. Erian is pale and lovely, with brown eyes and black hair. She has four Warders.
She has remained loyal to the White Tower during the split. She is part of the White Tower embassy that makes an alliance with the Shaido. She was also one of the Aes Sedai who kidnapped and beat Rand. During an escape attempt, Rand killed two of her Warders. Her two remaining Warders are Bartol and Rashan.
She was captured by the Asha’man at the Battle of Dumai’s Wells, and begged to swear fealty to Rand. Erian was one of the Aes Sedai who accompanied Cadsuane Melaidhrin to Far Madding. Although Erian isn’t mentioned during the cleansing of Saidin, Jordan said that this was a mistake and that she actually was meant to be guarding the non-channelers (Min, Harine etc) with Cadsuane. When Rand stays at Algarin Pendaloan’s house in Tear to recover after cleansing saidin, Erian and the rest of the group go with him. She pushes past Elza Penfell to inform Rand that her Warders are Traveling towards her. She helps maintains Semirhage’s shield while Merise Haindehl interrogates the captive. She goes to Rand’s room after finding out about Semirhage’s escape and then death.
Jeorg Damentanis is a jewel merchant from Illian. Jeorg is an older man. He has dark eyes and a gray-streaked beard. Jeorg and Pavil Geraneos negotiate with Weilin Aldragoran to purchase gems. They were at an inn called The Queen’s Lance in Kayacun, a city in Saldaea.

She allied herself with the Salidar Aes Sedai and was elected as a Sitter in the Salidar Hall. She is one of the Aes Sedai who misses Nynaeve al’Meara Healing of both Leane Sharif and Siuan Sanche from Stilling. She insists on going through the process again step by step and even tries to give advice on how to improve it and how to make Nynaeve angry again so she can keep Channeling. She is strongly allied to Romanda Cassin and follows her lead in the Hall.
She votes no on the Rebel Aes Sedai declaring war on Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan and is outvoted. She is one of the Sitters that want to begin negotiations with Elaida a’Roihan’s White Tower and is part of the group that negotiates with the White Tower Aes Sedai in Darein. She is also part of the group who question Shemerin about how she escaped the White Tower.
When the proposal of an alliance with the Black Tower is laid before the Hall, she becomes furious, calling Moria Karentanis a Darkfriend and almost comes to blows with her over the issue. She subsequently votes NO in the Rebel Hall of the Tower for an alliance with the Black Tower.
Bayle Domon is an Illianer ship captain, formerly of the ship Spray. He is broad and muscular, has a long beard that leaves his upper lip bare in the Illian fashion, and speaks with an Illianer accent.
Domon helped Rand al’Thor, Mat Cauthon, and Thom Merrilin escape Trollocs near Shadar Logoth, and has since been an active, if indirect, player in the current struggles between the Westlands, the Seanchan, and the Shadow. He is an accomplished sailor, and enjoys collecting old things and seeing the sights of the world. He did a brisk trade along the rivers, until – in Maradon – he bought one of the seals to the Dark One’s prison. Subsequently, he was chased by Shadowspawn and Darkfriends all the way to Illian. After being captured by the Seanchan, he was forced to hand the Seal over to High Lord Turak Aladon.
As a captain, Bayle is a formidable employer, but he makes good profits and shares them with his crew. He prefers to do all the difficult sailing maneuvers by himself, although he is confident rather than arrogant. He is loyal, helping out the needy when he can; for example, he arranged passage for Egwene al’Vere, Min Farshaw, Nynaeve al’Meara and Elayne Trakand, and later on helps them in Tanchico as well. After entering the Panarch’s Palace in Tanchico and successfully acquiring another of the seals and the “sad bracelets”, he had planned to move his fleet away to a new location, and managed to leave with Egeanin Sarna, seeking to drop the sad bracelets into the ocean near the Aile Somera. However, he was forced to surrender the a’dam to a Seanchan vessel.
Following the capture of the Spray and its contents, Egeanin was effectively promoted to Captain of the Green. Bayle, however, was taken prisoner and sold as da’covale. Fortunately, Egeanin managed to purchase him; although, this made him her so’jhin, to which he has since had trouble adapting.
Bayle runs into Mat in Ebou Dar and introducs him to Egeanin; and after she agreed to join him in escaping. She provides Mat three sul’dam and also help two Aes Sedai escape. However they are caught in the act by Tuon trying to leave and they kidnap her by tying her up. Egeanin names her as the Daughter of the Nine Moons and Mat names her as his wife three times thus completing half the marriage. Tuon does not struggle to get free but chose to go with them. They then escaped Ebou Dar and the Seekers by traveling with Valan Luca’s Grand Traveling Show and Magnificent Display of Marvels and Wonders. Domon shaved his head to avoid notice. He and Egeanin (now known as Leilwin Shipless) were later married. After a skirmish with Darkfriends in Maderin Mat and the rest of his group decide to leave Luca’s show. While riding through Altara they meet up with the Band of the Red Hand and begin to travel with them. He now acts as guard over Aludra’s cannons and doesn’t let anyone through, even Mat, without Aludra’s permission.
Kiril Drapaneos is a nobleman from Illian. He is a stork of a man with a square cut beard and a narrow face. He fights in Rand al’Thor’s army against the Seanchan trying to invade Illian. He follows Weiramon Saniago into the final assault on the Seanchan.
Nuhel Dromand is Warder to Myrelle Berengari, who saved him after the Aes Sedai to whom he was bonded died. Rumour has it that he may be married to Myrelle. He is an Illianer, with dark hair to his shoulders and the typical Illian beard leaving his upper lip bare. He is tall, dark and bulky. He is present when Egwene al’Vere is dressing down Myrelle for hiding Lan Mandragoran in Salidar. He is on edge watching Lan practice with the sword and picking up Myrelle’s somber mood. He is guarding Myrelle’s tent when Siuan Sanche arrives with the news that Egwene is still alive inside the White Tower.

She is not considered graceful and has a thick accent. She wears plain blue wool. She is from Illian and has been Aes Sedai for over one hundred and thirty years. She is a tough woman that will balk at little if she believes it is necessary. She has allied herself with the Rebel Aes Sedai and has been elected as a Sitter to the Rebel Hall of the Tower. She suggest stopping the soldiers’ pay when the Rebel Aes Sedai run into money troubles. This would doubtless result in them losing their army. She is one of only two Sitters newly elected to the Rebel Hall that is not traditionally too young for the position, the other being Romanda Cassin. This is related to the mystery of the Too Young Sitters.
She votes yes on the Rebel Aes Sedai declaring war on Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan. Her open outburst at Lelaine Akashi causes her and Lyrelle to vote “yes” as well, resulting in a lesser consensus standing and a passed motion. Later, Anaiya, a member of Egwene’s Council, comments that she is harder than Lelaine in some ways, laying the death of every single sister since the coup at Elaida’s feet.
She, Malind Nachenin, and Escaralde call a Sitting of the Hall to discuss the findings of the team of Aes Sedai that went to research the events at Shadar Logoth during the Cleansing of saidin. These three Sitters were, in truth, seeking a vote on an alliance with the Black Tower. When proposing to ally with the Black Tower, Magla Daronos almost gets into a fist fight with Moria. Moria escorts Merise Haindehl to the Rebel Hall as a representative of the Dragon Reborn. She stands to accept the offer from the Dragon Reborn of bonding forty-seven Asha’man.
Verin Mathwin’s notes on the Black Ajah named her as a member, which was subsequently confirmed at a meeting of the Rebel Hall. She was of the fifty executed Black sisters in the rebel camp.

As with many records of the war, Nicoli Merseneos den Ballin’s detailed history is not known. What is known is that circa FY 1090, a noblewoman named Esmara Getare overran and conquered much of what is now Illian and the Plains of Maredo before launching an assault on Andor. This assault was defeated and Getare was taken prisoner by Queen Telaisien. Following this event, Nicoli Merseneos den Ballin’s army captured Illian. It is uncertain when, although his name suggests he was a native of the city of Illian or the surrounding area. Nicoli proclaimed himself King after taking Illian, and won the support of the people and the nobility for his rule. According to records, Nicoli Merseneos den Ballin was considered a “fair and just” ruler, noted for his wisdom in creating the bodies known as the Council of Nine and the Assemblage to help him rule over the kingdom. Nicoli Merseneos den Ballin ordered the construction of the King’s Palace early in his reign and granted permission for the Council of Nine to build a “Great Hall of the Council” on the condition it was not as large as his palace. He was unimpressed to discover their hall was in fact an exact copy of his palace, merely two feet smaller in every dimension. It is unknown how long den Ballin ruled for, or when he died, save that his children succeeded him as the ruler of Illian, and his family retained control of the kingdom for over three centuries.

The rebels decide to join Rand’s army and Padros served under Rand when he attacks the Seanchan trying to invade Illian. He tries to assassinate Rand and narrowly misses, probably due to Rand’s ta’veren nature. He is then killed by surrounding Asha’man by means of Power-wrought Fire balls.
Aisha Raveneos was an Aes Sedai of the Gray Ajah. She is stout and has soft, brown eyes. Her name indicates that she was an Illianer. She had a Warder. Two days before Rand al’Thor’s forces attack Sammael and Illian, Mattin Stepaneos was kidnapped by the White Tower. He is currently Elaida’s “guest”. He approaches Egwene al’Vere, who tells him the truth of Colavaere Saighan and Morgase Trakand’s deaths. She defends the Dragon Reborn and points out his captivity in the White Tower.
